Do you need some good news?🌿
In November we were quite disappointed with the outcomes from the UN Biodiversity
Conference, COP 16, in Cali.
There was a lack of commitment from the international community and a huge finance gap.
Last week, these shortcomings have been fixed in Rome. Here are three key advancements:
Funding Agreement: The parties agreed to mobilise at least $200 billion of biodiversity finance a year by 2030. It includes innovative approaches to attract private investments.
Monitoring: The monitoring framework in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework has been amended with common measurement tools to track the progress of the 23 targets and four goals. The parties will use common “yardsticks” to measure progress.
Cali Fund: Has been successfully launched. Companies using natural genetic resources in their business will be asked to contribute financially to a fund. The latter will fund biodiversity projects in countries from which the genetic data originated.
