🌊 We are usually all about the solid part of our planet, but this week let‘s look at the Oceans!

From June 9–13, global leaders, scientists, and civil society will convene in Nice, France, for the Third United Nations Ocean ConferenUnited Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3). Co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, this pivotal event aims to accelerate action on Sustainable Development Goal 14: conserving and sustainably using the ocean, seas, and marine resources.

With over 60 heads of state and thousands of participants expected, the conference will focus on:

➡Ratifying the High Seas Biodiversity Treaty to protect marine life beyond national jurisdictions.

➡ Securing $100 billion in commitments for ocean conservation initiatives.

➡ Advancing the Nice Ocean Action Plan to address climate change, pollution, and overfishing.

💧 Why the Ocean matters

The ocean is more than a vast expanse of water; it’s a lifeline for our planet. Here are three critical ecosystem services it provides:

1. Climate Regulation: Oceans absorb nearly a third of human-generated CO₂ annually, mitigating climate change impacts.

2. Food Security: Marine ecosystems support fisheries that are a primary protein source for billions worldwide.

3. Coastal Protection: Mangroves and coral reefs act as natural barriers, reducing erosion and shielding communities from storm surges.

As UNOC3 unfolds, the world watches with hope that decisive actions will emerge to safeguard our ocean’s health and, by extension, our own.
