🌍 ESMERALDA at ESA Living Planet Symposium 2025: Three Key Takeaways

Last week, Vienna hosted the ESA Living Planet Symposium 2025 — a truly inspiring convergence of Earth observation science, industry, and policy. Our co-founder @Dr. Markus Neteler represented ESMERALDA and was excited to connect with other experts and explore the latest trends. Here are three key insights that resonate with our mission:

📡 Sentinel Longevity & Integrated Mission Data

ESA celebrated 10 years of Sentinel-2A, which has delivered high-resolution imagery well beyond its planned lifespan and now operates as part of a constellation alongside Sentinel-2B and 2C.

🔗 Relevance to ESMERALDA: Our analytics platform relies heavily on the continuity of Sentinel time series. This reliability is key to our ability to provide actionable insights into deforestation, landscape restoration, and environmental change monitoring.

🔥 Thermal Imaging

A relevant topic is calibrating thermal-infrared data prior to the launch of upcoming missions such as the Copernicus LSTM and TRISHNA. The aim is to calibrate these sensors via a global ground-reference network.

🔗 Relevance to ESMERALDA: Land surface temperature (LST) data from satellites is relevant to the offerings and services of ESMERALDA primarily because of its role in planning, monitoring and managing large-scale land degradation neutrality (LDN) projects. We use LST data for heat stress detection and vegetation resilience assessment.

🚀 Soil Moisture & Biomass Missions: Quantifying Land Productivity

New ESA missions (such as BIOMASS and future FLEX and soil moisture missions) provide deeper insights into vegetation health and soil conditions, which are crucial for assessing land productivity trends.

🔗 Relevance to ESMERALDA: We incorporate soil moisture and biomass proxies into our degradation risk models, enabling us to make dynamic assessments of restoration progress and climate impacts.

In Summary:

LPS 2025 emphasised a significant change in focus — from observing our planet to initiating climate-smart operations and services. At ESMERALDA, we are proud to be part of this ecosystem, delivering precise, timely and calibrated satellite insights to support climate adaptation, sustainable finance and resilient natural resource management.

Please feel free to get in touch if you would like to discuss how our EO capabilities could enhance your sustainability programmes, asset-monitoring pipelines, or TNFD-aligned reporting frameworks.
